Miners' Stories: Jean Whicher (Nee Seniuk)

Jean Whicher (Nee Seniuk) was born on 8 Sep 1927.
She was a Secretary-Warehouse Spring 1962-September 1967 in Steep Rock Iron Mines.

Bill started work in Steep Rock in July 1951and I arrived with out son, Wilf, in October of that year. Living accommodations were not the greatest and we were lucky, I guess, to live in Kaskie's garage (converted to living quarters) for six months and moved in the spring to the west end (Alberta) and after a couple of months wer given a house on Melville Street in Don Park. Moving into this house was wonderful and seemed very large in comparison to what we had lived in. in 1956 we bought our first home at 126 Maple Cresent and moved in on February 19,1960.

When I arrived in October 1951, I was really taken aback. Everyone seemed to be wearing high top rubber boots and of course, I would never do that, but soon found myself trying on rubber boots. Cinders formed our sidewalks and they were not the easiest to walk on. Needless to say, I was very unhappy, and our plans were to move, but day after day we made friends and after three months we did not want to leave.

Bill and Jean Davis lived next door and we baby sat each others children. Our first New Years dance was at Marks Street School where all the rubber boots formed an honor guard in the entrance.

The friendliness in the town is something I will always cherish. Everyone was always so quick and ready to help in time of need. There was no road out of town so therefore very few cars. Grace Hancock was a regular taxi for us in Don Park with little children.how exciting it was when the construction of the road to the Lakehead begun. The excitement of the weeks was drive on the road to see how much was accomplished in a week.

In 1954 I started working for Charlie Watt. When his Atikokan Office closed I went to work at the mine in the Warehouse where we had a real good group-Len Froehlich, Bill Galbraith, Flo Scott, Ruby Chumway, and I'm sure there were many others. The years at the mine were good years.

During our years in Atikokan, Atikokan was real good to us and we still have many good friends, who we visit, maybe not every year but every second year. These people who stood by us when things were rough.

In 1967 I moved to Toronto with my two sons. I began working in the Legal Department of The Toronto-Dominion Bank. After a couple of years I worked for the Associate General Counsel of the Bank and remained in that position till June 1985. My two sons attended Centennial College and Wilf works for Ontario Hydro and Michael lives in Halifax and works for Dominion Helicopters and travels-Thailand, Bombay, Singapore.

Jean Whicher (Nee Seniuk) and John Henderson Whicher had the following children:

   Wilfred WM Seniuk.
   Michael WT Seniuk.
