Cyrus Eaton, Chairman of the Board of Steep Bock Iron Mines Ltd., was a recent visitor to the property. Mr. Eaton was accompanied by Mrs. Eaton and charming daughter, Lissy.
While Mr. Eaton is a frequent visitor to Steep Rock, this was the first trip here for both Mrs. Eaton and their daughter. During an interview with this writer, Mr. Eaton stressed that he was at the property "merely to see how things were going." He explained that he was on his way from Cleveland to Regina to attend a Mines Ministers' conference. For their part, both Mrs. Eaton and Lissy expressed a great interest and delight in their visit to Steep Rock. Mrs. Eaton stated that she had heard so much of the doings of the company from her husband and of the beautiful country in Northwestern Ontario that she had long ago resolved to make a trip here at the earliest opportunity. |
| On arrival at the airport Mrs. Eaton and Lissy were obviously greatly impressed by the beauty of the area near the airport and, in fact, likened it to parts of the Maritimes.
During the interview Mr. Eaton expressed the opinion that the crippling steel strike in the United States would come to an end "in a few days." He cautioned, however, "if the strike does not end that soon, don't put me down as a false prophet but rather as an optimist." Referring to the recent disclosure that Premium Iron Ores Limited, sales agent for Steep Rock, had acquired an option on property in the Lakehead, Mr. Eaton was reluctant to go into details. "I'm greatly interested in building of industry in Canada and naturally in this area. Anything I can do in this area, which includes Atikokan, to give profitable employment, I am going to do. We are very much alert to any industry we can bring to this area. Referring to the present world situation Mr. Eaton said he thought there had been a "definite easing of tension between Russia and the Western World." He continued saying that he thought the visit of Nikita Krushchev to the United States would leave him (Mr. Krushchev) very impressed. In response to queries concerning the recently concluded Pugwash Conference, Mr. Eaton stated thatt this latest meeting had been very successful. He concluded by saying that in his opinion "men of science are getting together to protest the use of the great advances of science as potential war measures." He said that after the last conference those taking part had issued a statement which deplored the fact that so much money and so much talent are being devoted to the making of weapons. The Eaton party left Steep Rock after the overnight visit but judging from Mrs. Eaton's remarks she, her daughter and famous husband will be back with us before too long. |
